modu Taps Lunar Design to Create Distinctive and Fashionable Designs For Paradigm Shifting Mobile Phone Design
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 4, 2008 -- Lunar Design announces its collaboration with the latest innovator in the mobile phone industry, modu. modu partnered with Lunar to lead the design of the world's first modular mobile phone. The modu is a tiny and sophisticated mobile phone that can be slipped into a wide variety of modu jackets - stylishly designed phone enclosures that enable users to create a new look or design and provide added functionality - and modu mates -modu enabled consumer electronics devices. modu's modular phone ecosystem offers boundless possibilities in a simple and affordable way.
Having previously created designs for leading innovators, such as Apple, SanDisk, Hewlett Packard and Oral B, Lunar's creativity has made key contributions to these companies' successes. The results of Lunar's creativity are a familiar part of the visual landscape of personal technology.
In giving shape to modu's vision, Lunar's challenge was to create a design that expresses modu's differences. "The modu is the core component of an ecosystem. Rather than just design a shrunken mobile phone, we wanted to create a memorable and jewel-like symbol for modu," said John Edson, Lunar Design president. "The phone is crafted from super durable stainless steel, and visually it has what we call 'thumbnail equity,' i.e. the simple form and domino dot pattern are still recognizable from a distance."
Because modu is designed to key into a variety of other hardware, Lunar's design also incorporates a unique footprint - a yin-yang shape that is echoed in every modu jacket and mate. The presence of this unique footprint on modu's companion devices creates a brand signature for modu.
Lunar designed some of the first fashionable jackets announced in conjunction with February's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain: a set of music jackets and an entertainment jacket. For these products, Lunar extended the symbol of the modu into products that are designed to appeal to the edgy young and hip market.
"The jacket designs are more trendy because with modu, you aren't tied to one phone for years," said Edson. "These first jackets are in colors like metallic ruby and amethyst, following current trends. Next season, they'll be different in form, material and color. But the benefit isn't just for fashion. modu is giving people the ability to carry different phones for different situations. A smart phone jacket for work, an MP3 phone at play and perhaps even naked - no jacket - in a small purse at the opera, for instance."
"For years, Lunar has led the design of products that changed the landscape of personal technology," said Edson. "The modu phone is poised to reinvent the mobile industry, and we are thrilled to have partnered with modu for the creation, launch and ongoing development of this groundbreaking product."
"modu is no ordinary company or concept. It is disruptive and different and is designed to make people think about the choices - or lack of them - they currently have with their mobile phone. The engagement with Lunar, and the overwhelmingly positive response we have had from right across the mobile industry spectrum, has reinforced our conviction that it's time to modu," said Zack Weisfeld, vice president of marketing for modu.
With offices in California, Europe and Hong Kong, Lunar's global experience and savvy with high-tech personal devices was instrumental in its selection as the designer for modu.
